Fort Amherst and The Battery

Fort Amherst, directly across harbour from Signal Hill, is a small community at the entrance to St. John's harbour. Its geographic position made it an ideal fortress to defend Newfoundland's coastline from German U-boats during WW2. Further along St. John's harbour, you will see the colorful houses of the Battery built in the rugged cliffs of Signal Hill. These picturesque homes appear to be embraced by Mother Nature herself. The North Head hiking trail passes through the neighborhood of The Battery and provides an amazing subject for ocean and nature photography.
